Marlins to hold registration
WEIRTON - The Marlin Youth Swim Team will hold registration from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Millsop Community Center.
MYST has been in existence since 2010, when it formerly functioned as the Millsop Marlin Swim Team through the center. The program is open for swimmers ages 5-19 and range from the inexperienced novice to the experienced high school swimmer.
Weir to host Steelers game
WEIRTON - The Weir High Class of 2015 will host a basketball game with members of the Pittsburgh Steelers on April 25. All proceeds will benefit the Class of 2015 prom and senior dinner.
Tickets can be purchased from the activity director at the school, pre-ordered at the Millsop Center at or from any Class of 2015 student at Weir High.
Tickets are $7 pre-sale and $10 at the door.
FUS men's tennis wins
STEUBENVILLE - Seniors Paul Jarzynka, Luke Merry and the Franciscan University of Steubenville men's tennis team closed its season with a 9-0 win over Penn State-Behrend Sunday at Belleview Park.
"Everyone played well and played as steady as they could in this kind of (windy) weather," said Barons head coach Jeremy Ellis.
In doubles, No. 1 Jarzynka and Zachary Quiza won 8-1, No. 2 and Merry and David Freytag won 8-2 and No. 3 Robert Butcher and Joseph Staniszewski won 8-0.
"It's a good last match for Paul and Luke to go out on," head coach Jeremy Ellis said. "It's been great having them on the team.
"What they have been able to do these past four years will be remembered. You couldn't have hand picked a better group of guys to start Franciscan tennis."
Jarzynka won his singles match 6-2, 6-0 and Merry 6-0, 6-0.
"Luke is very humble and competitive and a great guy to have around," Ellis said. "Paul's charisma and leadership have been the core of the team and has made this a huge success."
The team will begin play in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tournament April 26.
FUS softball loses two
STEUBENVILLE - The Franciscan University of Steubenville softball team dropped a doubleheader to visiting Medaille College on a windy Sunday, 15-1 and 10-1.
"They had some pretty big bats on their team. They were getting the ball up high and it was just catching that jet stream and going right over the fence," head coach Jennifer Parker said, referring to several of Medaille's hits that sailed well beyond the fence and into the trees lining the top of the hill behind the field. "They took advantage of the wind today, and there's not a whole lot you can do when that's happening."
FUS scored in Game 1 when senior Mallori Linscomb doubled, junior Katrina Fabian singled and Linscomb scored when sophomore Iliana Gonzalez reached on an error. Fabian also doubled earlier in the game.
The Barons host LaRoche College at 3 p.m. Tuesday for two.
Panthers, Bears split
RAYLAND - The Buckeye Local and Oak Glen basaeball teams split a doubleheader on Saturday. The Panthers earned a 4-3 win and the Golden Bears came back for a 9-6 victory.
Buckeye Local's Eric Williams struck out 11 and walked one in the Game 1 win. He also singled twice, along with Jared Moore.
Zac Porter fanned eight and walked one in taking the loss. Bub Haddox tripled and singled.
Oak Glen's Tyler Click grabbed the Game 2 victory with Haddox pitching the final two innings. Haddox tripled and doubled and Patrick Reardon added a pair of singles.
Logan Noon took the loss. He singled twice, as did Eric Banal. Jonathan Borkoski singled three times.
