CADIZ - Union Local freshman pitcher Bailey Lohr's first varsity start will be a memorable one as she handed Harrison Central its first home loss in three seasons, 4-0, Friday.
Union Local picked up a key win over Harrison Central Wednesday night at home and came to Cadiz Friday night expecting the Huskies to be eager for revenge. The rematch was tempered by both coaches making decisions to go with their back up hurlers. Huskies coach Don Bethel cited a tough week with three long outings for resting his ace Katie Ellzy and Union Local coach Roger Herbert was resting junior Maddie Schafer.
"Maddie actually had to leave just prior to the start due to a family emergency," Herbert stated. "But we had already made the decision to go with Bailey, even if she was facing Ellzy."
Despite the lack of experience on the mound, neither team would score a run for five innings. The Jets would manage just two hits, stranding three in the first five innings. The Huskies were hitless until the bottom of the fourth inning when sophomore Shianne Nameth singled to start the one out rally. Kara Dunfee hit a long fly ball that tipped of the webbing of the center fielders glove to set the table for HarrisoN Central;s power hitting Ellzy. She drew a walk to load the bases after an at bat that featured a home run shot that curved foul and a line drive that fell just inches off the left field line.
Lohr would retire the next two batters on pop outs.
After retiring the Jets in order to start the fifth inning, again the Huskies would threaten. Ashley Heavilin reached on an error then Paige Richards bounced a double off the center field fence to put runners in scoring position again with just one out. Once again Lohr would get a batter to pop out then with two down second baseman Ali Delaney made a run saving stop to retire the side with a 4-3 rally killer.

"You win games in softball with pitching and defense," Herbert said. "I thought Bailey did an outstanding job pitching and our defense was making plays behind her, that play at second was huge in this game."
The Jets got a spark from the defensive stop that carried to the top of the sixth inning. With the top of the order coming to the plate in senior Cori Medley who singled aboard. Delaney followed suit with her own single setting the table for Morgan Edwards who notched a pair of RBIs with a triple to left center. Shayla McGary's sac fly brought Edwards home to give Union local a 3-0 lead.
Devin Earliwine singled and then scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning but the Huskies went in order signaling a celebration on the mound for the Jets.
"We want to dedicate this win to Maddie." said Herbert. "This is a big win for us, for all of our girls, it was a true team effort."
"You hate to take anything away from their pitcher, she threw a nice game for them,' complimented Bethel. "The bottom line is we did not perform.
"For the most part we were flat, we just did not have any good at-bats. Most of the balls we hit never made it our of the infield. It was embarrassing."
