WIAACC to meet Wednesday
The Women in Action Against Cancer Coalition will meet at noon Wednesday at Manfred's Restaurant to continue planning future projects.
The combined January and February meeting included a review of 2013 events, some of which were providing services for more than 200 men and women; the annual poker run benefits and fundraisers; the wreath ceremony at the Fort Steuben Mall in October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month; informational bingo at Urban Mission Ministries; and "adopting" children at Christmas to provide gifts.
The group also considered an agenda of events for 2014.
The fall issue of Appalachia Community Cancer Network included an item on the coalition, which is comprised of more than 50 women "dedicated to making a difference in Jefferson County."
The article noted that the coalition provides education on cancer prevention and early detection and raises fund to help address the gaps in breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnostic services available through other programs. The coalition operates on a budget generated through fundraisers and community support to provide mammograms, clinical breast exams, pelvic exams, Pap smears, and colostomy and ultrasounds for under- and uninsured women.
The article included a photograph of Judy Manfred, coalition chair, having her head shaved as part of a Shave-A-Thon fundraiser that raised more than $2,000 during "Community for a Cure" Week in partnership with the Fort Steuben Mall. Overall, more than $5,000 was raised through daily activities.
WIAACC provided more than $19,500 in paid services to more than 240 women in 2012, according to the most recent statistics.
New members are welcome to join the coalition. For information, call (740) 264-2710 or (740) 282-5676.
