WEIRTON - The Bruins took their time waking up, but once they did the Brooke boys' basketball team got on a roll and did not slow down.
Brooke recorded 39 points in the second quarter en route to a 91-54 victory over Weir Tuesday night inside the Carl Hamill Fieldhouse.
The 39 points in the second stanza were the most the Bruins have scored in a single quarter all season.
SHORT JUMPER — Weir High’s Michael Curtis takes a short jump shot as Brooke’s Russell Schwertfeger defends during the second quarter of Tuesday’s 91-54 victory by the Bruins.

"I didn't know we had 39 points in the quarter," Brooke (10-8) head coach Dave Reitter said. "A couple of kids got hot, and tonight we got the ball to the players who were hot. That was good to see.
"We did some good things in the game. If we continue to play that way, we will do fine. We have got some tough games ahead, but we are going to take them one game at a time."
The Red Riders got off to a fast start and led by as many as eight points on two occasions in the first quarter before the Bruins rallied and pulled away.
"I think we started the game with a lot of emotion and enthusiasm," Weir (1-16) head coach Mike Granato said. "We played pretty well for a while.
"Then, (Russell) Schwertfeger hit some 3s. They got some steals, and the next thing you know we are down 55-28.
"Our kids played a lot harder tonight. They played with more emotion and intensity than last night. They played more together as a group out on the court tonight.
"When you lose by 37 points, it is hard to be positive, but our young kids did some good things. We had some bright spots.
"We are going to continue to work and practice hard. We have got a tough weekend ahead with playing Friday at Oak Glen and then Saturday at East Fairmont."
Thomas Cole collected a game-high 24 points to lead Brooke. Schwertfeger recorded 23 points and Anthony Barnhart tallied 19 points.
For Weir, Chris Wood delivered a team-high 11 points, and Michael Curtis contributed 10 points.
Wood opened the game with a 3-pointer giving the Red Riders a 3-0 lead and Reitter called a timeout just 41 seconds into the game.
"We talked about what we were supposed to be doing," Reitter said. "We were not in what we were supposed to be in. I told them to get their minds back into the game. We told them to do what we asked, and good things will happen. Good things happen when you do that.
"I told them that if you do things you are not supposed to do and they don't work than that is on you, but if you do what we ask and it doesn't work than that is on me. I will take the heat for that.
"I thought Weir was aggressive in the first quarter. Mike's kids played well, but our kids responded. We hit some open shots."
The Red Riders led 12-4 before the Bruins battled back to tie the score at 16 at the end of the quarter.
"I think the first quarter was the best quarter we have played all year," Granato said. "Brooke is a good ballclub. Dave's team is in a tough sectional. They are playing good ball right now."
The second stanza was a different story as the Bruins outscored the Red Riders 39-12 to build a 55-28 advantage at halftime.
Brooke welcomes Wheeling Park tonight.
"I think any game is a tough task," Reitter said. "We have to be ready mentally and physically. It is a big game because it is our next game. I don't look ahead. I take them one game at a time. Every game is important."
The Bruins will also play the Patriots Saturday in Wheeling in third meeting this season. Wheeling Park won the first meeting, 72-52, in the OVAC Class 5A semifinals.
