WINTERVILLE - The Jefferson County Airport Authority learned Monday that a paving contractor will hold its price for the runway work but the aggregates for the extension project still will have to be bid out.
Shelly and Sands of Rayland agreed to hold its price of $966,780 from last year for the paving of the 600-foot extension of the runway, the turnarounds at the ends of the runway and an asphalt overlay of the existing 4,400 feet of runway.
The airport authority had tried to get local purchasing of the aggregates for the base of the new section of runway but ran into difficulty because of the sizing of the rock. The county commissioners now are in the process of letting bids for the aggregates.
The county received $1.5 million in state grants for the runway extension, with the county contributing $500,000. The project deadline has been extended and the county faces getting all the work done by May 31.
Excavating work began in the fall but was postponed because of the weather.
Gary Folden, airport authority secretary, said the project can be completed by the end of May if the weather cooperates. He said the county may have to ask the state for a minor extension.
The airport authority also heard from Paul Strack of Michael Baker, the engineering consultant for the runway extension project, about how the airport authority could improve its communication with the Federal Aviation Administration.
Michael Baker also informed the airport authority that it won't charge the authority any additional money for engineering work on the runway project because of communication issues on the project.
The company had a price of $193,000 for the engineering work but incurred bills totaling $224,000. The amount over the original price won't be billed to the county, Folden said.
