WEIRTON - A buzzer-beater can provide a big lift for a team.
That was the case Thursday night at Weir as the Red Riders' Raegan Stead delivered two buzzer-beating 3-pointers from the corner to catapult the Weir girls' basketball team to a 63-33 victory over Bishop Donahue at the Carl Hamill Fieldhouse.
Stead beat the buzzer in the first and third quarters.

Stead's first buzzer-beater gave the Red Riders a four-point lead after the first quarter, and it was the first points scored in Weir's 15-1 run which broke open a close game.
Stead's second buzzer-beater of the night capped a 22-4 third quarter for the Red Riders enabling Weir to build a 29-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
"I thought that was the best all-around game we have played all year," Weir (4-13) head coach Bill Smith said. "We have been working real hard on boxing out at practice. Tonight, I saw some kids boxing out.
"We shot pretty well. We need to shoot well to be successful. If we shoot well, we have an opportunity to win.
"We rebounded well. We got the ball in transition, and we were able to get some easy buckets."
The Red Riders scored at least a dozen points in all four quarters, and the Red Riders outscored the Bishops in each quarter.
Bishop Donahue was limited to single digits in each of the first three quarters.
"It was a flat game," Bishop Donahue (6-11) head coach Donnie Gillis said. "We played last night. We have faced a lot of adversity all year. We just had an off game today."
Senior Alyssa Shingle scored a game-high 22 points to lead the way for Weir.
"We anticipated they would get the ball to Shingle," Gillis said. "We tried to key on her. They used a couple of screens, and she was able to pop open. She was on tonight."
Stead delivered 19 points to the Red Riders' cause.
"She (Stead) played well," Gillis said. "We tried to focus on her and Dalrymple. We tried to focus on the girls who exposed us in the last game."
Cassidy Campbell collected a team-high nine points for the Bishops.
"We played them before," Smith said. "We shot the ball well in the second half. It was a close game. We knew we had to shoot the ball well early tonight. I thought we did that."
Two foul shots by Campbell pulled the Bishops to within 9-8 late in the first quarter before Stead beat the buzzer giving the Red Riders a 12-8 lead at the end of the quarter. Stead scored 10 points in the stanza.
"The kids played hard," Gillis said. "We played a good game last night against Paden City, and we asked them to turn around in less than 24 hours and try to do the same thing.
"All I can ask is that the kids play hard, and I think we did that. It was just a bad-shooting night. I am proud of the girls. We faced a lot of adversity this year. The team has stayed strong every step of the way. I am proud of them."
The Red Riders extended their lead in the second stanza. A basket by Ashlynn Drizake capped a 15-1 Weir run giving the Red-and-Black a 24-9 lead and they led 26-15 at halftime.
"We knew how they played," Smith said. "We did a better job tonight. The kids have been working hard in practice."
Stead's second 3-pointer gave the Red Riders a 48-19 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Stead scored four points in the quarter to equal the Bishop's output up to that point.
"It was a great game," Smith said. "We cleared the bench. We got the opportunity to get everybody in."
The Red Riders led by as many as 33 points in the fourth quarter.
"A 'W' is a 'W'," Smith said.
Both teams are scheduled to return to the court Monday in OVAC Tournament pool play. Weir will play at Wheeling Park, while Bishop Donahue will play at home against Valley.
