So here it is - Groundhog Day and the start of a new month.
And that means maybe, just maybe, better weather days are coming and hopefully healthier eating patterns that were supposed to get a jumpstart last month.
I think it's safe to report that at long last, all of the Christmas cookies are finally gone.
Good grief, Charlie Brown.
Down the hatch went the last gingerbread man the other day from this big tin of temptations, a gingerbread man minus one leg but still pretty tasty even so.
What a glut of goodies the holiday brought, and what a commitment it's been to pare down the post-holiday pantry.
There ought to be some reward for that other than thicker thighs.
I mentioned this to my daughter the other day as I coffee dunked a hardened sugar cookie past its prime but no way a candidate for the trash can.
Tossing treats is a sin, a big no-no in my book.
She was sympathetic, shaking her head that's attached to that petite little body of hers in those skinny jeans she wears all the time - pants that would make bigger gals like me understand what freshly ground sausage must feel like making its way through casing.
She refrained from joining me, wincing at the ravished remnants of a box of chocolates.
"No thanks, mom," she said, making a sour face.
I get very little help from family when it comes to finishing off sweets and find it ever so frustrating to have brought two children into this world who were born without a sweet tooth.
How did that happen?
And even when they do have a dessert, they're so disciplined about it. Talk about taking all the fun out of goodie gorging.
I've tried to balance out my bad eating this winter with good exercise, but I haven't made much progress.
It's not good jogging weather, so I turn to cable TV's offering of an amazing menu of fitness and exercise programs.
So far, my left thumb is in great shape from speed scrolling through the listings with the remote arrows.
I was lured and lulled by some of those 5- and 8-minute workouts. How hard can those be, I wondered.
Actually, it's amazing how long it takes for such a short amount of something to be over and done with. I did manage to work up a sweat ... and an appetite.
There's not much relief in sight this month for better eating, especially now that a co-worker has brought in her daughter's order form for Girl Scout cookies.
Here's hoping I can rid of them in time for Easter candy.
In the mean time, I wish all the best for the groundhog today.
I'll definitely stay out of his way.
I don't want to be responsible for blocking his view.
