Top Toronto spellers

Nathan Keenan, front left, an eighth-grader at Toronto Junior/Senior High School, placed first Thursday evening during the Toronto City Schools Spelling Bee held at the Toronto/Junior High School. Keenan correctly spelled “bungalow,” in the 17th round. A bungalow is defined as a low house, with a broad front porch, having either no upper floor or upper rooms set in the roof, typically with dormer windows. Top finishers in the bee included, front row, from left, Jaden Grimm, second, an eighth-grader from Toronto Junior/Senior High School; Caleb Leasure, third, a fifth-grader from Karaffa Middle School; Madeleine Perkins, fourth, a seventh-grader from Toronto Junior/Senior High School; Brant Reeves, fifth, a fifth-grader from Karaffa Middle School; and middle row, Marlene Wolf, Toronto City Schools spelling bee coordinator; ­Alyssa Owens, sixth, a seventh-grader from Toronto Junior/Senior High School; Jamie Mason, seventh, an eighth-grader from Toronto Junior/Senior High School; Sara Yarosz, eighth, a seventh-grader from Toronto Junior/Senior High School; Zoe Clapham, first alternate, a seventh-grader from Toronto Junior/Senior High School; and Maddie Anderson, second alternate, a fifth-grader from Karaffa Middle School; and back row, Bruce Trushel and Buzzy Cattrell, members of the Steubenville Rotary Club. The top eight spellers will advance to the 2014 Jefferson-Harrison County Regional Spelling Bee, which will be held at 1 p.m. March 8 at Buckeye North Elementary School in Brilliant. The regional bee is coordinated by the Jefferson County Educational Service Center, and sponsored by Eastern Gateway Community College, the Rotary Club of Steubenville, Huntington Bank and the Herald-Star, with special consideration provided by the Ohio Lottery Commission. — Mark J.
