Top Buckeye Local spellers

Elijah Lovell, a sixth-grader at Buckeye West Elementary School, placed first Wednesday night in the Buckeye Local School District Spelling Bee held at Buckeye Local High School. Lovell correctly spelled “belladonna” in the ninth round of the bee. Belladonna is a poisonous plant that has reddish bell-shaped flowers and shiny black berries. Top finishers in the spelling bee included, from left, Lovell; Blake Ring-Fish, second, a seventh-grader from Buckeye Local Junior High School; Abby Nightingale, third, a seventh-grader from the junior high school; Kya Demeter, fourth, a sixth-grader from Buckeye West Elementary School; Emily Berry, fifth, a sixth-grader from Buckeye West Elementary; and Talia Snively, sixth, a seventh-grader from the junior high school; and back, from left, Louise Snider of the Steubenville Rotary Club; Jaelyn Thompson, seventh, a fifth-grader from Buckeye South Elementary; Tyler Rielly, eighth, a seventh-grader from the junior high school; and alternates, Brody Cermak, a sixth-grader from Buckeye North Elementary; and Mary Dagan, a sixth-grader from Buckeye South Elementary; Susie Nolan, Buckeye Local School District spelling bee coordinator; and Ross Gallabrese, executive editor of the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times. The top eight spellers will advance to the 2014 Jefferson-Harrison County Regional Spelling Bee, which will be held at 1 p.m. March 8 at Buckeye North Elementary School in Brilliant. The regional bee is coordinated by the Jefferson County Educational Service Center and sponsored by Eastern Gateway Community College, the Rotary Club of Steubenville, Huntington Bank and the Herald-Star, with special consideration provided by the Ohio Lottery Commission. — Mark Law
