Retail sales show increase in September
STEUBENVILLE - Retail sales in Jefferson County increased in October by 15 percent compared to the same period last year.
Jefferson County Treasurer Raymond M. Agresta said retail sales for October totaled $63.93 million, generating $957,695 in piggyback sales tax revenue for the county. Agresta said piggyback sales tax receipts for October 2012 generated $833,815, based on retail sales of $55.58 million.
Retail sales in Jefferson County have averaged $63.54 million a month for the first 10 months of 2013, compared to $60.2 million a month for all of 2012.
Karaoke fun night at community center
EAST SPRINGFIELD -A karaoke fun night with disc jockey Chelsea Matta will be held from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday at the East Springfield Community Center, which is located on county Road 39 next to the East Springfield Volunteer Fire Department.
Admission is $3 with $1 going into the singer's reward jar. Matta will give each singer a ticket, and a drawing will determine which singer gets the winnings.
There is no admission charged for those under age 10.
The karaoke singing is open to all ages.
There will be free pizza with drink.
"Come on out for a great night of fun and sing your favorite songs," an event promoter said.
There also will be a door prize drawing entitling the winner to two free dinners at the East Springfield Community Center's monthly fundraiser.
County plans blood drives
WINTERSVILLE - The American Red Cross Jefferson County Chapter has blood drives planned in the coming weeks.
Blood drives include noon to 6 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Chester, 416 Carolina Ave. and the Masonic Temple, 202 S. Third St., Toronto; and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Jan. 13 at Edison High School, state Route 152.
Free dance for middle school pupils planned
WEIRTON - Never Alone WV, a nonprofit organization that supports a drug free community, is sponsoring a middle school dance for pupils in grades sixth, seventh and eighth in Hancock and Brooke counties, including the Catholic schools.
The dance is planned from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Weirton Millsop Community Center.
Admission is free, and light snacks will be provided, according to organizers.
DJ Ninn will be on hand, and there will be a police officer in attendance for safety, organizers said.
