TORONTO - Various city issues were discussed during Monday's City Council meeting.
Mayor John Geddis updated council on issues facing the city, including the extensive water line replacement project.
"The water line project - (contractors) are taking this week off," he said, adding rainfall in the past week slowed down the project. "We also had a couple of water line breaks on Josephine Street."
Geddis said the city will receive its new garbage compactor soon.
He added bids for the demolition of the former Blue Danube tavern were received, and Kelly Excavating Co. was awarded the contract and will begin demolition soon. He said Kelly had the lowest bid at $9,500.
"We need some major work done at the (city's) sewage plant," said the mayor, adding the city also will be investing in tools required by the Environmental Protection Agency. "We're working on getting some type of readings on the (city's sewage) lift stations."
Geddis said other improvements will include new pumps and valves for the plant.
"We did get the public work funds for (replacement) of the bridge (near Titanium Way)," the mayor continued, adding he's seeking additional funding for the project.
Geddis also said the city successfully negotiated a three-year contract with the union representing the city's firefighters, which will include a 3 percent raise the first year and additional 1 percent raises the second and third years. Also negotiated was a $100 additional clothing allowance, Geddis added.
In other matters:
Geddis said the city ended the year with funds left over in the budget.
"We ended the year in the black, and we're still able to make some capital improvements without passing on the costs," he said.
City Auditor Joe Motto thanked council, city workers and departments for staying within their budgets to allow for the carryover.
Council appointed Councilman at large Ron Holmes and 3rd Ward Councilman Jason Fogle to sit on the Volunteer Firemens' Dependents Fund committee.
Geddis said there would be no city garbage service Wednesday or Jan. 1.
