Shop with a Cop

December 11, 2013
The Herald-Star
Sgt. Casey Robinson of the Smithfield Police Department helped Michael Marsh and his mother, Mable Ruckman, of Cadiz pick out a remote-controlled truck during the 26th-annual Shop with a Cop event held Tuesday evening at the Steubenville Wal-Mart. The event is organized by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 97 and funded by donations from local citizens and businesses. Each cop gets to spend $100 on each child in a family, and every family also receives a turkey or ham. According to associate member Cindy Longwell, more than 10 law enforcement agencies from Jefferson, Carroll and Harrison counties participate. “Just seeing the kids smile is the best part,” Thomas Thompson, a Harrison County sheriff’s deputy, said. “It’s a good time for everybody.” This year there were 64 families with 118 children who went home with Christmas gifts. - Shae Dalyrmple
