Genealogy chapter meets Monday
The Jefferson County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogy Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints Church on Powells Lane in Wintersville.
Chapter officers will present a program on the "interesting things" they have found as they preserved the thousands of records obtained from the Jefferson County Courthouse in recent years. The records included probate packets, wills, naturalizations, coroner's inquests, mothers' pensions, grand jury reports, criminal records, military records and many other "treasures of history and genealogy," according to a society spokesperson.
The program will include a review of all the sources in the office and how they can assist people with their family research.
The chapter's meetings are open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
In the event of inclement weather, the meeting will be postponed until 6:30 p.m. Dec. 9 at the chapter office.
A 2014 project will involve offering a researcher experienced in genealogy to provide one-on-one assistance to the public. Several meetings will be deemed "research open houses."
"At each we will select a number of attendees and see what we can find," the spokesperson said of what will be their version of "Who Do You Think You Are?"
