The axle and wheel were broken off a pickup truck during a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of state Route 2 and 27th Street in Wellsburg at about 6:52 p.m. Monday. Wellsburg Police have charged Chester H. Baker Jr., 58, of Wellsburg with driving under the influence in connection with the accident. Police said Baker was turning onto 27th Street when he failed to yield to another pickup truck in the southbound lane, striking it and causing it to veer into a vehicle parked at a business on the southwest corner. The Brooke County Ambulance Service was dispatched, but the drivers declined to be treated. The Brooke County Sheriff’s Department and Beech Bottom and West Virginia State Police also responded. -- Warren Scott
