Youth to compete in pageant
Two local youth are set to compete in the National American Miss Pageant which will be held in Anaheim, Calif., at Disneyland during Thanksgiving week.
They are Lil Smith of Steubenville and Amber Fiala of Bloomgindale.
Smith, daughter of Michael and Mary Smith, earned the title of 2013 National American Miss Ohio at the state pageant held in June.
Fiala, daughter of Lee and Tammy Fiala, earned the opportunity to attend, winning top model honors.
Both will represent the Buckeye State with the opportunity to win their share of more than $500,000 in cash and prizes.
The National American Miss Pageants are "dedicated to celebrating America's greatness and encouraging its future leaders," according to a press release. Each year, it awards $1.5 million in cash, scholarships and prizes to recognize and assist the development of young women nationwide. The pageant program is "based on inner beauty, poise and presentation" with emphasis placed on the importance of gaining self-confidence, learning new skills and good attitudes about competition and setting and achieving personal goals.
Fiala, a senior at Buckeye Online School for Success, is a member of the 4-H Ridge Hoppers and works at Burger King as a manager shifter.
Smith, a fifth-grader at Bishop Mussio Elementary School, is involved in volunteering for the Pam Shoemaker Foundation for breast cancer awareness, recently holding "Cheer for a Cure." She is active in cheering, dancing and tumbling.
