STEUBENVILLE - Jefferson County has been chosen to receive $33,242 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county.
The selection was made by a national board chaired by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from the American Red Cross, Catholic Charities, USA, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, the Jewish Federations of North America, The Salvation Army and United Way Worldwide.
The local board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas throughout the county.
A local board made up of representatives from the local agencies named above, in addition to a representative from Southeastern Ohio Legal Services, Jefferson County commissioners and a homeless representative, will determine how the funds awarded will be distributed among the local emergency food and shelter programs.
The local board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive the funds and any additional funds made available.
Under the terms of the grant, local agencies chosen to receive funds must be private voluntary non-profits or units of government, be eligible to receive federal funds, have an accounting system, practice nondiscrimination, have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food or shelter programs and, if they are a private voluntary organization, have a voluntary board.
Jefferson County distributed emergency food and shelter funds previously with the Salvation Army, Jefferson County CAC, Wintersville St. Vincent de Paul, God's Outreach, Northeast Jefferson County Food Pantry, Catholic Charities, Smithfield Food Pantry and Mingo Social Services participating. These agencies were responsible for providing 4,000 meals and 200 nights of lodging.
Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for the emergency food and shelter program funds must contact Jefferson County CAC, 114 N. Fourth St., Steubenville, at (740) 282-0971 for an application. The deadline for applications to be received is 9 a.m. Monday.
