Apple Anything Contest to be held
WELLSBURG - Entries are sought for the Apple Anything Baking Contest to be held at the Wellsburg Applefest on Sunday.
Prizes will be awarded to three winners in each of three categories: dishes made with dough, such as pie; cakes; and miscellaneous.
Applications may be found at the Brooke County West Virginia University Extension Office, Brooke County Public Library or Brooke County Senior Center and should be returned by Tuesday. Entries should be brought to the Wellsburg Town Square at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
This year, festival-goers will serve as judges after paying $1 to sample each desert from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Brooke school retirees to meet
WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Association of Retired School Employees will hear from JoEllen Goodall, principal of Colliers Primary School, at its Oct. 8 meeting at Brooke High School.
Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m., and those planning to eat are asked to call Ruth Lewis at (304) 737-2314 no later than Tuesday.
All new and past retirees are invited to join the group, which meets for fellowship and programs of interest to them.
Bethany Women discuss activities
BETHANY - The GFWC-WV Bethany Woman's Club opened its season Sept. 16 at Bethany Memorial Church, with President Helen Moren presiding.
Moren participated in the Connections program with Bethany College and spoke on club activities, including participating in the communitywide yard sale and serving dinner to members of the Antique Car Club.
Also discussed were the budget, sewing and filling Christmas stockings for Boatsie's Boxes and taking orders for nuts.
Members will be participating in Make a Difference Day and making Halloween favors for Ann's Country Retreat and Valley Haven Nursing Home.
The GFWC-WV Northern District 100th-annual convention will be held Oct. 12 in Moundsville. GFWC-WV President Elect Jody Cunningham will be the guest speaker.
Pumpkin-decorating contest set
WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library will hold a pumpkin-decorating contest in conjunction with the annual Wellsburg Applefest at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
The contest is open to children in preschool through eighth grade, who will use pumpkins donated by the Wellsburg Applefest Committee. Members of the Friends of the Brooke County Library will be judges. Call (304) 737-1551 to reserve a pumpkin.
Children invited to knitting group
WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Library's Kids Knitting Group will meet from 5:45 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Children in third grade or higher can learn to knit with help from instructor Nora Bell. Participants should bring yarn and needles or loom to start creating. Call (304) 737-1551 to register for the free program.
Storyteller coming to library
WELLSBURG - Storyteller Judi Tarowsky will present an hour-long program, All Apples!, at 11 a.m. Oct. 5 at the Brooke County Public Library.
Using songs, audience participation and stories, Tarowsky will invite families to explore and learn fascinating facts and lore about apples.
"West Virginia has deep connections to the apples we enjoy everyday," Tarowsky said. "We'll discover Brooke County's part in apple history and hear about an apple discovered in the Mountain State that became famous around the world."
A former news reporter, Tarowsky won the Golden Shovel as the first-place winner in the Inaugural Annual Strand Theatre Storytelling Festival Adult Amateur Liar's Contest in 2006 and the Silver Shovel as second-place winner in 2007.
She also has participated in the Three Rivers Storytelling Festival in Pittsburgh, the Vandalia Gathering in Charleston and many other events. She is a member of the West Virginia Storytelling Guild and the Ohio Organization for the Preservation of Storytelling.
Safe driving class offered
WEIRTON - The Brooke-Hancock-Ohio-Marshall Retired and Senior Volunteer Program will sponsor an AARP Safe Driving class from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the Mary H. Weir Public Library.
The class is geared toward mature adults who may or may not be experiencing problems with diminishing vision, hearing and reaction time. Rules of the road are reviewed along with safe driving techniques. Most insurance agencies offer a discount on vehicle insurance premiums to those who have completed the two-day course.
The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members and must be paid prior to attending the class. Participants are limited to 20, so reservations should be made by calling (304) 527-3410.
Lodge women to hold yard sale
WELLSBURG - The Wellsburg Women of the Moose will hold an indoor yard sale at the Moose Lodge at 844 Main St. from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
