House of Prayer
The House of Prayer located on Riddles Run Road near Brilliant on township Road 163 is planning special services for September.
On Sunday it will welcome the Rev. Jerry Baylis to the pulpit as guest speaker for the 11 a.m. worship service.
The church will host a concert featuring Doc Roe on Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. Weather permitting, it will be held outdoors, but move indoors if need be.
Roe has been singing since age 6 with his family and also with various gospel groups. He is in the process of making a CD and is setting up concerts for a free will love offering to help with expenses.
The House of Prayer also recently held its annual Grandparents Day service with special prizes awarded, including: youngest grandfather, the Rev. Donald Cline; youngest grandmother, Cathy Cline; oldest grandfather, Estey "Bud" Gaines; oldest grandmother, Dottie McGee Mayle; Grandfather of the Year, the Rev. Jack Jackson; and Grandmother of the Year, Brenda Burge.
to perform Friday
The Bontrager Family Singers of Kalona, Iowa, will minister in song during a concert set for Friday at the Carrollton Bible Chapel, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The Bontragers - Marlin and Becky and their 10 children - live on and work a 600-acre livestock and crop farm in eastern Iowa. They have traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada since having begun their gospel-bluegrass style music ministry in 2005.
Providing their own instrumentation, they bring along banjos, violins, keyboard, mandolin, guitars, dobra, harmonica and bass guitar.
"The Bontragers are passionate about encouraging families to be strong in the Lord and to love one another," a news release notes.
A love offering will be taken, and those attending are asked to bring two food items for donation to Loaves and Fishes, the local food pantry.
The church is located at 365 Steubenville Road S.E., Carrollton.

marking 85th year
The First Church of the Nazarene in Toronto is celebrating its 85th anniversary year with a celebration planned for Sept. 29.
A luncheon will be held in the fellowship hall following the 10 a.m. service that day with all friends invited to attend.
The church was established in 1928 at the same location on Finley Street and has been a home church to many residents through the years, according to a news release.
The Rev. Eric Frey is the church's pastor.
St. Peter CWC begins new season
The St. Peter Church Catholic Woman's Club held its first meeting of the new season on Sept. 3 with a covered-dish lunch in the church hall. The Rev. Timothy Huffman led the opening prayer.
The club was reminded that "A Day with Bishop Monforton" will be held on Oct. 17 at St. Teresa of Avila Church in Cadiz. A monetary donation from the CWC will go to one of the bishop's charities, the Immaculate Heart Fund.
The CWC card party, which will be held Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. in the church hall, was discussed.
It was decided to hold the CWC Christmas party on Dec. 3 with plans to be finalized at a later date.
Bea Antol won the 50/50 drawing.
The next meeting will be held at noon on Oct. 1 in the church hall. Hostesses will be Jeanne Dowden, Beverly Kidwell and Casey McDonald.
Stratton church to
The Stratton Church of the Nazarene will host a pancake breakfast and bake sale from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Sept. 21 at the Stratton Municipal Building Hall.
Proceeds from the fundraiser will go toward the cost of replacement windows in the dining room and bedrooms of the parsonage.

at Irondale UMC
Irondale United Methodist Church will be the site of a dinner from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The menu will include cream chicken and biscuit, mashed potatoes, green beans, dessert and drink. Cost is by donation. Carryout will be available.
Sveta Petka Kolo
The Sveta Petka Kolo of Holy Resurrection Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church, 528 N. Fourth St., Steubenville, will meet at 1 p.m. at the church on Oct. 10, having lunch beforehand.
The church will be holding its Fall Serbfest on Oct. 10-12, it was noted when the group met for its August meeting at Eat 'n Park in Steubenville.
The group has been invited to have dinner and fellowship on Oct. 3 with the Philoptochos Society of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
The Sveta Petka Kolo is making plans for the Slava dinner on Oct. 27, a meal that will include ham, sweet potatoes, Serbian noodles, cole slaw and desserts.
The Trinity Emergency Assistance Relief fund at the Tony Teramana Cancer Center was designated as the August charity donation.
Trumpets of Joy
to mark 51st
The Trumpets of Joy Quartet will celebrate their 51st anniversary at 5 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Mount Carmel Community Baptist Church located at 708 N. Fifth St., Steubenville.
Sister Harriet Kirkland-Washington of Mount Calvary Chapel of Midland, Pa., will be the mistress of ceremonies. The Gospel Lights of Pittsburgh, the Mighty Golden Wonders of Warren, Doc Roe of Mingo Junction, 1NEMINISTRY of Pittsburgh and the Old Men and the Boyz of Akron will be the special musical guests.

The Women's Missionary Union of Open Door Baptist Church in Colliers met Sept. 10 at Mario's Restaurant in Weirton for the installation of new officers for the 2013-14 church year.
There were eight members attending.
Officers are: Mildred Richter, president; Rhonda Dawson, vice president; Donna Garrison, secretary; Pam Holden, treasurer; Katherine Wise, public relations; Lois Flemm, telephone; and Rosemary Jennings, devotions.
It was announced that a check had been sent to the Church of the Nazarene in Weirton to support two children for the "Food for Ewe" program.
A letter from missionary Becky McGregor was read. Saundra Tate read a thank-you letter from Mission Dignity, which the UMW helps support.
The group voted to help support the Brooke Clothes Closet with socks and underwear to be brought to the next meeting, which will be held Oct. 1 at the church.
Jennings, who will serve as hostess at that meeting, read devotions titled "Unwrapping Your Spiritual Gifts."
Richter announced the yearly birthday dinner will be held Oct. 27, the same day as Pastor Appreciation Day. They will be decorating for the four seasons.
White in concert
at Finley UMC
Finley United Methodist Church, 958 Lincoln Ave., Steubenville, will host Jonathan White in an outdoor concert on Sept. 22 beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Participants are encouraged to bring a lawn chair. A love offering will be taken.
Pumpkin rolls on
minds of CWC
The August opening meeting of the St. Agnes Catholic Woman's Club was held in the parish hall with Joanne Raha presiding and plans announced for making pumpkin rolls on Sept. 30.
The pumpkin rolls will sell for $8. Barbara Crugnale will be in charge of the morning shift and Jackie Parks and Raha, the evening shift. Denise Galownia will be the caller. Dolly McCormack and Rose Barsnack will handle the filling.
Before the start of the meeting, a pizza party was held for the women who had helped last year with the pumpkin rolls.
The Rev. James Dunfee gave the opening and closing prayers and reported on completed and upcoming projects.
Raha thanked members for their work and dedication on CWC projects and help with the parish picnic.
Jeannette Yanssens reported on the DCCW convention held June 4-5. St. Agnes CWC received a certificate of appreciation for its work on the pumpkin rolls.
Discussion was held on the National Council of Catholic Women.
St. Agnes served as host of the Mother of God Deanery meeting on Sept. 8.
It was announced that the day with the bishop will be Oct. 17 in Cadiz.
Crugnale, Clara Sue Milewsky and Raha were hostesses for the meeting.
The next meeting will be held Sept. 24 in the parish hall with Rose Marie Chappano as chairman of the hostess committee.
at Jewett church
Ron Barkett will be featured in concert at St. James Lutheran Church in Jewett on Sept. 22 as the the Rudy Bertka Memorial Concert gets under way at 2 p.m.
The concert will be followed by refreshments in the church social hall.
Barkett is trained in classical music but sings gospel, jazz, pop, patriotic and opera in addition to other music styles. He is a regularly featured soloist in the Dominic Greco Band and has performed as baritone soloist with the Tuscarawas County Philharmonic, Summit Choral Society of Akron, Franciscan University of Steubenville, Baldwin-Wallace College and Mount Union College.
Barkett also is a member of Tubafours, a tuba quartet often performing in the area and directs the chancel, handbell and brass choirs and serves as choir director at First United Methodist Church in Dover.

Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church will hold a spaghetti dinner from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. today at the church located at 101 Lisa Court, Weirton.
The meal includes salad, bread, spaghetti, meatball, beverage and dessert.
