SALEM - A murder-suicide is being declared in the early Sunday morning shooting deaths in the employee parking lot at the Salem Wal-Mart.
According to the Salem Police Department, dead are Charles Kropinak, 36, of Campbell, and Sylvia Maillis, 37, of Canfield, who was a Wal-Mart employee.
The police department received a 911 call of reported shots at 2:40 a.m. in the southeast parking lot at Wal-Mart on East State Street Upon arrival, officers located a deceased female and male.
According to detective Dave Talbert, the employee was working the 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift. She went on break with a couple of co-workers to the nearby Taco Bell and Dunkin' Donuts. They returned to the employee parking lot.
Some time later, a vehicle pulled in two spaces down from them. A male, the reported estranged boyfriend of the woman, exited his vehicle. She exited the vehicle she was in. A verbal altercation occurred. They were between the two vehicles when the male brandished a gun and shot the woman multiple times before taking his own life, according to reports. The weapon used was a 9mm semi-automatic handgun. It was located near the male, who had a concealed carry permit according to reports.
There were multiple witnesses to the shooting who were interviewed, and store security video is being analyzed, officials said.
According to Talbert, the shooting was ruled a murder-suicide. It is believed, but not verified yet, that the two involved were separated for nine months as a couple. The woman had obtained a protection order from Mahoning County but it was not certain if it was still active, officials said.
