JVS Board meeting canceled
BLOOMINGDALE - The special board meeting of the Jefferson County Joint Vocational School set for today has been canceled and will be rescheduled at a future date.
Charges pending in assault case
MINGO JUNCTION - A village man is in the county jail facing pending charges in connection with an assault Wednesday evening that left another man unconscious, Village Police reported.
Police were called around 7 p.m. to the 700 block of Commercial Street about a man being beaten unconscious, police reported.
The suspect, Nick F. Zervos, 44, of 2667 Commercial Ave., was located on railroad property by Norfolk Southern police and taken into custody and charged with criminal trespass, police reported.
Police reported an officer will meet with the county prosecutor's office about other charges.
The victim was taken to Trinity Medical Center West, where he received stitches, police reported.
Probation revoked for city man
WHEELING - A Steubenville man was sent back to prison after a probation revocation hearing before U.S. District Judge Frederick P. Stamp Jr.
U.S. Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld II said Thomas MacNeill, 31, was sentenced to 12 months and one day imprisonment for possession and use of synthetic marijuana, oxycodone and morphine and failure to attend substance abuse treatment appointments. He originally was sentenced in August 2008 to 51 months of imprisonment and three years of supervised release for interstate travel to promote the distribution of heroin.
Water line repair set for Friday
STEUBENVILLE - The city water department will start a major water line repair project at 7 a.m. Friday near the Fourth and Market streets intersection.
Assistant Water Superintendent Michael Wigal said Market Street will be closed to traffic from Fourth Street to Commercial Alley until the work is completed.
"We are advising motorists to use an alternate route to avoid the work area," said Wigal. "The water department is planning to complete this repair without interruption to water services in the downtown area of the city on Friday. However if we encounter unforeseen difficulties the repair project will be rescheduled for Sunday and will start at 7 a.m.," explained Wigal.
"If the work has to be done on Sunday, Market Street from Fourth Street to Commercial Alley will remain closed until the repairs are completed. If we work on Sunday water service will be interrupted in the work area and possibly in the entire downtown area, including University Boulevard," said Wigal.

Brilliant Legion to hold Sept. 11 service
BRILLIANT - Brilliant American Legion Post 573 will conduct a Sept. 11 service at 2 p.m. Sunday at the post home. The group has held a commemorative service each year since the 2001 bombing.
There will be an honor guard, the Brilliant Volunteer Fire Department will take part, and there will be a flag raising on the fire truck. Organizations from the area have been asked to present wreaths in honor of those who died.
Sgt. Jack Ernest will be the guest speaker and refreshments will follow, according to Commander Roger Cline.
Airport master plan focus of hearing
WINTERSVILLE - A public meeting has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Sept. 12 to solicit comments on the master plan for future growth at the Jefferson County Airport.
The board of trustees will host the meeting, to be held in the public meeting room at the terminal, located at 600 Airpark Drive.
Head Start classes start Monday
STEUBENVILLE - The Jefferson County Community Action Council Head Start school will start Monday at centers located in Adena, Tiltonsville, Steubenville and Wintersville.
Classes run from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. and will be taught by AA accredited teachers and offer nutritional meals and field trips.
There is no cost for children to attend Head Start classes, and seats are still available in the classrooms. Enrollment is available by calling the CAC at (740) 282-0971, extensions 146 or 151.
The Head Start offers transportation and services to income-eligible families and children of Jefferson County.
The program also provides services for children with disabilities. Other services include parent, family and community engagement, social services, social emotional, education and male involvement.
Transportation will not be available the first week of school.
Groups to meet in Cadiz
CADIZ - The Area 16 Workforce Investment board quarterly meeting is set for 10 a.m. Sept. 13 in the Harrison Community Hospital.
The Area 16 Council of Government quarterly meeting is planned at 1 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Harrison County Department of Job and Family Services.
Historical Society to meet
