NEW CUMBERLAND - It was a small, but competitive crowd Saturday morning at Mountaineer's Woodview Golf Course for the 14th-annual Weirton United Way Ladies Golf Challenge.
Sunshine and clear skies greeted the teams as they gathered for the morning welcome by United Way officials before the shotgun start.
Tournament Chair Ginger Greene thanked the participants for coming out, explaining money raised by the event would go toward the Weirton United Way's 2013 campaign.
"We are here to raise money for this very good cause," Greene said.
Greene explained the rules of the day before sending the ladies off to the greens.
"The main thing is to have fun," she said.
Greene thanked the members of the tournament committee, along with United Way Executive Director Kristin Bowman-Cross, administrative assistant Linda Stear and 2013 Campaign Chair Don Gianni Jr. for bringing the event together.
Greene also made note of the golf team members from Weir High School and Weirton Madonna High School, who had assisted in preparing for Saturday's event.
"We appreciate their help," Greene said.
