Weekends in the late summer and early fall always have been special to residents of the Tri-State Area.
They mean that school is starting and signify the return of high school football.
The 2013 season will open in a big way Thursday evening with a doubleheader at Robert Kettlewell Memorial Stadium in Wintersville. Indian Creek will take on Weir High at 5:30 p.m. while Weirton Madonna will meet Beallsville at approximately 7:45 p.m. as part of the McDonald's Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Kickoff Weekend.
Also on Thursday at Wheeling Island Stadium, Bishop Donahue will meet Cameron at 5 p.m. while Harrison Central and Wheeling Central will battle in the nightcap, while Steubenville Big Red will take on Detroit Central at 7 p.m. in Harding Stadium.
Area fans know that this week would not be complete without the publication of our annual football edition. The theme of this year's preview, which will be included in our Wednesday editions, is Leading the Way. As always, it offers a comprehensive look at each of our area's teams, including rosters and schedules. It's a must-read for all fans of high school football.
If you can't wait for Wednesday, you'll have the opportunity to purchase a copy of the football edition Tuesday, when the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times present our annual community tailgate party. The event will be held in Herald Square Park, at 401 Herald Square in Steubenville. Fans will have the chance to purchase a copy of the football edition a day early, and enjoy a hot dog, a drink and a bag of chips for $1.50. Proceeds from the event will benefit the literacy programs at the newspapers.
As a bonus, the event, which will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., will feature a performance by the Steubenville High School Pep Band.
Our high school football football preview is the first part of out Gridiron Series. A separate section previewing professional and college football will be included in our Aug. 30 editions.
Football is back. We hope you will join us in Herald Square Park Tuesday as we get ready for the season to begin.
