STEUBENVILLE - The Steubenville Board of Education approved several personnel recommendations as well as the 2013 district goals during its monthly meeting Wednesday night.
According to Superintendent Michael McVey, the board pledged to, "improve through curricular design and intervention the academic performance of all students as measured by state and local assessments. We will provide targeted professional development to facilitate improved student performance, We will maximize our resources to benefit our educational program and community. And, we will enhance reciprocal means of communications that will create greater understanding and good will within the district and community."
Board members also recognized the Back-to-School Rally Committee during a brief ceremony Wednesday night.

"The committee has been working for the youth of Jefferson County. The work you have done during the past 20 years has been absolutely great," said Assistant Superintendent Barry Gullen.
Most of the 45-minute meeting was devoted to personnel issues, and the school board approved several resignations including:
- Stephanie Patterson as a Pugliese West preschool teacher;
-William Kotsanis, an East Garfield elementary teacher;
- Doris Locasio, as a Half-Time Class Size Reduction teacher at Wells Academy;
- Jennifer Meyer, a Half-Time Class Size Reduction teacher at Pugliese West;
- Julie Stenger, a paraprofessional at Wells Academy, Lucas Huffman, paraprofessional at Wells Academy. Karen Narramore, paraprofessional at East Garfield and Richard Nixon, a paraprofessional.
The board formally agreed to hire Helen DeMaria and Jacqueline Meek as Half-Time Class Reduction teachers for the school year.
Kathy Eddy was hired as a physical therapist for 10 hours a week at $50 and hour.
The board approved Gabrielle Connors, Anthony Gossett, Ann Hardman, Katherine Huber, Vincent Olisa, Shana Cunningham and Jessica Ware as substitute teachers for the 2013 to 2014 school year.
Phyllis Bickerstaff and Linda Kidwell were approved as head cooks in the school district.
The board agreed to hire Miranda Barnhart to work in the school district's cafeteria programs.
A donation of $400 for the Steubenville High School football team from Hollywood Center Inc. was accepted.
And, the board agreed to participate in the school lunch and breakfast programs for the school year and the school lunch program prices were also approved.
The $25,000 Power Teaching Grant was accepted.
In other business, the milk and bakery items bids for the school year were accepted.
And, quotes for security services and the collection of refuse at the school buildings were accepted.
An activity group to clean Harding Stadium after the Steubenville High School and Catholic Central High School football games was approved at a $300 a game payment fee.
