The Jefferson Society of the United Way of Jefferson County recently met in the board room at the new United Way headquarters located at 511 N. Fourth St., Steubenville, to begin planning for the 2014 campaign year.
The Jefferson Society, which is comprised of the leadership donors of the United Way campaign, raised $196,581.55 of the campaign grand total which was $445,225.69. The Jefferson Society exceeded its goal, coming in at 107 percent.
The United Way of Jefferson County funds 19 member agencies and programs, raising money locally that stays locally, a spokesman said.
Members of the Jefferson Society include, seated, from left, Jackson; Patricia Fletcher; and Beth Rupert-Warren, executive director of the United Way; and standing, Dave France, United Way board chair; Judge John J. Mascio; Suzanne Brown; and Edward Florak.
A new phase added this spring was the 24-seven "2-1-1" free and confidential information and referral system, linking persons in need of information to a variety of assistance agencies.
"This system is a priceless asset for persons in need of emergency assistance. It also relieves the financial burden and stress on a number of our local help agencies," the spokesman said.
"It is our hope that our friends who belong to the Jefferson Society will continue their generous and faithful support," said Anita Jackson, chair of the Jefferson Society for the past eight years. "It is extremely rewarding to witness such a wave of generosity that continues year after year among our leadership donors," she said.
The society will hold its annual "thank-you" gathering at the home of Derek and Lisa Ferguson on Sept. 5. The event, known as "Jazz in the Garden," will feature the music of Dr. Francis Sunseri and his band.
