City man sentenced in drug case
STEUBENVILLE - Tracy McGowan, 32, of 1401 State St. was sentenced to one year in prison on Thursday by Jefferson County Common Pleas Judge Joseph Bruzzese Jr. after McGowan pleaded guilty to three counts of permitting drug abuse and one count of trafficking in marijuana.
Four Chicago men and McGowan were arrested following an Oct. 23 raid on McGowan's house.
The Jefferson County Drug Task Force along with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, Hancock-Brooke-Weirton Drug Task Force, federal Drug Enforcement Administration and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation participated in the drug raid.
Authorities said 50 grams of heroin, an ounce of marijuana and $12,500 in cash, along with various drug paraphernalia and other evidence was seized during the raid.
McGowan was ordered by Bruzzese to forfeit $3,222 seized during the raid.
Three Chicago men were sentenced to prison and one Chicago man was sentenced to serve six months in the Eastern Ohio Correction Center.
Fire damages outside of garage
STEUBENVILLE - A fire the City Fire Department believes was intentionally set damaged the outside of a garage apartment in the rear of 1423 Pennsylvania Ave. around 12:30 a.m. today.
Neighbors saw two males who were attempting to break into vehicles run between two buildings, the fire department reported. A large amount of garbage, a mattress and wood pallets were lit on fire at the rear of one of the buildings, according to the fire department. The fire extended up the side of the garage apartment but was extinguished before it got inside the structure, the fire department reported.
The fire and police departments are investigating.
Follansbee man sent to prison
WHEELING - U.S. Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld II said David McGowan, 46, of Follansbee was sentenced to two months in prison on a probation violation for possession and use of oxycodone.
McGowan originally was sentenced on July 18, 2011, to one day imprisonment and three years of supervised release for the distribution of heroin. McGowan will self-report to the designated federal institution on Aug. 15.
Wellsburg man killed in accident
WELLSBURG - A 44-year-old Wellsburg resident was killed around 3 p.m. Wednesday when the flatbed truck he was operating on Brady's Ridge Road overturned.
Brooke County Sheriff's deputies said the driver, Thomas Hukill, was hauling a piece of heavy equipment when the accident happened.
The investigation is continuing, but authorities believe mechanical issues may have played a part in the mishap.
Brady's Ridge Road connects Washington Pike with Bethany Pike, a dispatcher said.
Council to approve electric supplier
MINGO JUNCTION - Village Council has scheduled a special meeting for 3:30 p.m. Monday in the Municipal Building to select an electricity supplier under the village's electric aggregation program.
John Ney, an energy consultant with World Energy, said he has received about seven proposals for the electric rates. One proposal came in at the rate Ney said will save the average residential electric customer more than $170 a year.
If council selects an electric supplier on Monday, Ney said the program will go into effect with the October meter readings.
