TORONTO -The city school district will be hosting an auction of items from the former high school led by Basinger Auction Service on Sept. 16-20.
The online auction will mean items can only be bid on after a person has registered on the Basinger site, at www.basingerauctions.com. Items will range from chairs to bookcases to memorabilia and just about anything one could think of being in a school, according to Maureen Taggart, high school principal and district communications coordinator.
"(Those wishing to bid) have to register online at the site beginning Sept. 12 to be able to bid," said Taggart, adding the auction is similar to eBay. "The biggest difference from eBay is that none of these items will be shipped. The person winning the bid will have to come to the site and pick them up."
Pickup of auction items by the winning bidders will be from 9 a.m, to 5 p.m. on Sept. 23-28 at the former high school. Taggart emphasized the registration aspect.
"If potential bidders go on site they can register in advance (beginning Sept. 12), and they will be notified by e-mail updates when the auction goes live," she said, adding the site accepts all major credit cards for payment. "Some items (up for auction) will be packaged together as lots, while other items will be separate."
Fred Burns, district superintendent, said citizens will have an opportunity to see items in the upcoming auction.
"We will host a preview where people can go to the former high school and see the items themselves," he said, adding the time will be from noon to 8 p.m. on Sept. 16. "That's also the date the auction begins."
There also will be a link on the Basinger website where the catalog of items to be auctioned off can be downloaded. Catalogs also will be available during the preview Sept. 12, according to a Basinger official. For those without a computer who wish to bid, the district will make computers available, according to Burns.
"We'll set up a time when anyone who needs help can come to the (new) high school (during the auction dates) if they have no computer and wish to bid," he said. "We'll help them get online and walk them through the site.
"Funds raised through the auction will go to the new high school stadium lighting project," Burns continued.
