Tom McCain, left, a Vietnam War Army veteran, and former Steubenville High School teacher and football coach, was one of two participants who received the Octa Foster Spirit award at the Smithfield High School Alumni banquet. After coaching at Big Red, he went to Buckeye North from 1983 to 1990 and to Buckeye Local until 2005. He is the Piney Fork American Legion commander and a member of Smithfield Lions. His brother, Randy McCain, who received the other award, was a Buckeye North and Buckeye Local assistant coach. He also coached Smithfield Little League and Smithfield Midget football for many years and was a member of the Smithfield Lions. Walter “Wally” Jancura, right, an Army veteran during the Korean War, received the Mary Sutherland Community Service award. He played the accordion for church services and formed a group with his wife and three children called the Polka Jacks who made two albums, appeared on six television shows and were on the WOMP-FM Polka Party many times in their 20 years together. He is a member of the Piney Fork American Legion and the Jefferson County Veterans. -- Esther McCoy
