STEUBENVILLE - Summer enrollment is up at Eastern Gateway Community College.
The headcount of 1,089 is up 3 percent from the numbers posted in 2012, according to college officials.
Summer courses typically attract many students who return home from a four-year institution and take one or two classes.
This summer is no exception at Eastern Gateway as many of the enrollees are taking classes to transfer to their universities, officials said.
Eastern Gateway offers many courses that are guaranteed to transfer to Ohio's state universities as well as other institutions in the area, officials said.
Enrollment figures were reviewed for the college's board of trustees during its regular meeting.
In other business, the board approved the college's budget for fiscal year 2014 in the amount of $21,112,650.
Trustees and college personnel will review the college's mission statement in the coming months as a new strategic plan for 2016-21 is developed.
The board was informed that the college adopted a new guideline for closing the college's sites for inclement weather. The college will be closed if the sheriff's department in the county of the college location issues a Level 3 alert. There will be no delayed openings due to inclement weather.
