SMITHFIELD - The theme for this year's Jefferson County Fair is "Where Dreams are Made!"
The event is slated Aug. 13-18 at fairgrounds at Friendship Park.
Junior fair activities will take place as part of the fair, and applications need to be submitted today for the junior fair queen or king, any male or female, ages 16-19 as of Jan. 1, 2013, and is an active member of a youth organization participating in the county fair or an individual competing as an independent exhibitor is eligible.
Junior fair prince or princess candidates must be ages 12-15 and be an active member of a youth organization participating in the fair or competing as an independent exhibitor is eligible to complete.
Participants in the junior fair "Star Search" Talent Show must be at least 5 years old and not older than 19 as of Jan. 1, 2013. The show is open to youth from all Ohio counties. Jefferson County youth will only compete against others from the county, according to fair organizers. Youth from all other counties will compete against each other. Category winners will compete for the best of show award. The competition will take place at 6 p.m. on Aug. 12 in the Rozsa Entertainment Pavilion. Registration will be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the gazebo. Applications are encouraged, but walk-in entries are welcome from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Jefferson County youth organizations wanting to participate in the 2013 fair parade slated for Aug. 17 must submit a completed entry form and parade information sheet, which are due today. The Dave Barnhouse print, "Talking Turkey" will be auctioned at the livestock sale on Aug. 17 following the buyers' picnic, at approximately 6 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the junior fair. The print will be on display at the sheriff's office on the fairgrounds until the time of the sale.
