MOUNDSVILLE - Representatives of West Virginia's daily and weekly newspapers will meet Aug. 8-10 in Wheeling for the 2013 West Virginia Press Association annual convention.

Press Association Executive Director Don Smith is urging Northern Panhandle officials to do what they can to make a lasting impression on the newspaper representatives who will be at the event, which is being held at Oglebay Park.

"We want them to leave with a good sense of the Panhandle," he said.

To help facilitate that connection, Smith, a Marshall County native, is spending the week touring the Northern Panhandle. He addressed Marshall County commissioners Tuesday about how they can market the area during the convention. He plans to be in Hancock County today to make a similar presentation.

Smith said while the several hundred individuals in attendance will be busy throughout the weekend at the conference itself, there will be time for them to explore what the Northern Panhandle has to offer.

Smith said in the past, the conference, which is held at a different location each year, would take place with the surrounding communities unaware. He is making the effort to involve the community more and make the conference a learning experience for attendees.

''We were missing a chance to get that local flavor,'' he said. ''We wanted to find a way that this could benefit the communities.''
