The Franciscan Women's Scholarship Guild, which funds the Rose M. DeFede Scholarship, recently hosted a standing-room-only crowd in the Tony and Nina Gentile Gallery on the campus of Franciscan University of Steubenville.
The event included a brief concert by the Brooke High School Madrigal Choir under the direction of Rick Taylor and was followed by a light lunch and the awarding of prizes.
"It was delightful to witness the various groups who came together in support of such a worthy cause," said Anita Jackson, the university's director of community relations and the coordinator of the project.

Anne Hicks, a scholarship recipient, gave a moving account of how the scholarship blessed her life and that, she, in turn, was able to spread that love and help to others, Jackson said. "It is wonderful that we can put actual names and situations to our scholarship recipients," Jackson said. "Our success rate is tremendous and for that reason, all of the persons who donated to this event or came to support it, should bask in the realization that because of their help, lives are being blessed and changed for the better," Jackson said.
During the evening, Patricia Fletcher led the audience in a prayer for the Rev. Richard Davis, vice president for community relations, who will be leaving the university to assume his new position as minister provincial of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Province of the Priests of the Third Order Regular at the end of June.
The late Ruth Kessler and Marge Madigan were remembered as two members of the guild who had passed away during the year.
The Rose M. DeFede Scholarship, which is funded by the Franciscan Women's Scholarship Guild, is designed to target older female students who are older than 22 and who need scholarship help in order to complete a degree and enter the workforce or get upgraded in their place of employment.
