Gentile calls for veterans' support
COLUMBUS - State Sen. Lou Gentile, D-Steubenville, has called for the General Assembly to pass permanent legislation giving military veterans academic credit for skills learned in the military service.
Gentile complimented Gov. John Kasich for issuing an executive order simplifying the process for awarding college credit for military education for veterans and service members.
"I feel very strongly that the General Assembly should do everything possible to help our veterans find jobs. That's why I introduced my Veterans Opportunity Act last year to standardize the way Ohio's public colleges and universities give veterans academic credit for skills they learned in the military. It was a good idea then, and it's still a good idea now that Gov. Kasich has incorporated my legislation into an executive order. But, the governor's action is only a first step. This policy should be written into the Ohio Revised Code so it becomes permanent law and that can be accomplished by passing the Veterans Opportunity Act," said Gentile.
