To the editor:
The PTA at Colliers Primary School is a group of people who are genuinely dedicated to the students and teachers. Their presence in our classrooms and hallways are always welcomed. They take a special interest in the variety of needs our students come to school with on a daily basis. It impresses me every time I see them speaking or laughing with a student when they are at school setting up for an event, volunteering, collecting their mail or box tops or picking up their own children. Our PTA members have made it a priority to establish a rapport with the students and teachers. Not only do we have parents, we also have the support of grandparents who join PTA. We are definitely a family.
In addition to the love and attention that is spread throughout our school by the PTA, they provide basic needs to our students. New shoes, warm jackets and coats and everyday clothing are provided. A call is made to a member and by dismissal that student is going home in a new pair of sneakers. The same goes with coats and jackets.
During the Christmas season, the PTA members adopt a student and provide him or her with gifts off of his or her wish list. They include the siblings of that student. Gifts are wrapped and placed under the tree.
Children who are unable to participate in our annual Santa's workshop and book fair due to family financial restraints, are given the opportunity to purchase gifts for their families and go home with a new book. No one is turned away. What a blessing to see the student's face when they come back to the classroom knowing they were able to participate.
The PTA pays for the buses for our field trips. Members purchase Scholastic News for every classroom. Volunteers pack up the orders for Market Day every month, which allows our school to use the profits to purchase additional materials and resources for our students.
The PTA acts as our school's librarians. They see that every student can experience the joy of choosing and checking out a book of their choice. The PTA has started researching and placing Lexile scores on each book in our library. By doing this, books will be matched more appropriately to the readability of the students.
Recently, our school became a candidate for the School of Excellence Award. We anticipated a team from the state visiting our school. The PTA parents and grandparents rose to the challenge by cleaning; painting walls; hanging pictures, certificates and awards; arranging; planting flowers and doing landscaping. The staff, along with the PTA, dedicated hours, days and even the weekend to make Colliers Primary School spectacular inside and out.
The staff at CPS appreciates our PTA very much. Their heartfelt dedication and commitment makes CPS a school where everyone wants to be. Every student is a No. 1 priority. The world is a better place because of people like them.
