Seat belt checkup set for Friday
STRATTON - The Jefferson County Health Department will conduct a free safety seat checkup from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the Stratton Volunteer Fire Department.
The fire department is located at 136 3rd Ave.
Appointments are available by calling (740) 283-8636, or stop-ins are welcome.
Absentee ballots available
WELLSBURG - Applications for absentee mail-in ballots for the city's June 11 general election are available by calling (304) 670-5567.
Registered voters who are unable to vote in person may apply. The deadline to register is May 21 at the Brooke County Courthouse.
Weirton planners OK pawn shop
WEIRTON - The city's planning commission agreed Wednesday to recommend that council permit a pawn shop to operate out of a property currently zoned for commercial/professional uses.
The property, located at 1306 Potomac Ave., previously had housed a recycling center.
During the public hearing on the request, local realtor Jamie Guida of J.J. Guida/Airport Realty said her client wants to move his pawn shop into the building.
Chief Code Officer Rod Rosnick said a pawn shop business is currently not permitted at the property.
"Keep in mind, this will be for all C-2 areas, not just this (one)," he said.
The commission voted unanimously to refer the request to council for its approval.
Blood drive set for May 18
WELLSBURG - The Wellsburg Women of the Moose will sponsor an American Red Cross blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 18 at the Moose Lodge at 844 Main St.
Doughnuts will be served to morning donors and a hot lunch will be served later.
Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments also may be made by calling Linda Porreca at (740) 264-4286 or (304) 737-1552. Donors should bring a photo ID.
Sign work to start Monday
WINTERSVILLE - Work is set to begin Monday on a systematic sign upgrade project along U.S. Route 22 in Jefferson County, the Ohio Department of Transportation reported.
A safety project will replace the signs along U.S. Route 22 from Reeds Mill to state Route 7, ODOT reported.
Traffic will be maintained with flaggers when necessary.
Paving work to begin on Route 250
CADIZ - More than 3 miles of resurfacing work is set to begin Monday on U.S. Route 250 in Harrison County, the Ohio Department of Transportation reported.
Work will take place from the end of the newer, concrete section just east of county Road 501 (Welsh Road) to U.S. Route 22 at Cadiz, ODOT reported.
Traffic will be maintained with flaggers.
ODOT's contractor for this $1.2 million project is Lash Paving Inc. of Colerain. All work is expected to be completed by October.
Breadbasket sets tag day
WEIRTON - The Community Breadbasket is staging a tag day Saturday at various locations throughout the city.
Volunteers will be collecting at Tudor's Biscuit World, Ponderosa, Kmart, Shop 'n Save, Convenient Food Mart on Pennsylvania Avenue, and Wal-Mart, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; First Choice America, Three Springs Drive location, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; Suzanne's Hallmark from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Kwik King, Colliers Way, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Members of the Tri-State Church of God, Sacred Heart of Mary, Covenant and United Methodist churches and the Boy Scout troop at Cove Presbyterian Church will assist.
Proceeds will be used to address hunger in the community.
