April 29, 2013
The Herald-Star
The annual National Day of Prayer will be observed in Jefferson County at noon on Thursday at First Westminster Presbyterian Church, 235 N. Fourth St., in Steubenville. Anita Jackson, director of community relations for the Franciscan University of Steubenville, recently discussed the annual observance with Diocese of Steubenville Bishop Jeffrey M. Monforton, who will offer the opening prayer. The Rev. Jason Elliott, pastor of First Westminster Presbyterian Church, is host pastor and the Rev. Philip Makari, senior pastor of Starkdale Presbyterian Church, Steubenville, will give the keynote address. Preparing for the event are, from left, Elliott; Monforton; Jackson; Richard Pizzoferrato, Serra Club of Steubenville president; and Makari. Designated by Congress in 1952 to be held on the first Thursday of May, people are asked to turn to God in prayer and meditation on that day. Jackson, who has coordinated the local celebration for its 21-year history, said participants at the National Day of Prayer will include the choir from Steubenville High School, which will perform beginning at 11:45 a.m. Other musicians include Denise Truax, Commissioner Thomas Graham, Frank DiPietro and Steubenville City Manager Cathy Davison. Area Boy Scouts of America Troop 401 will present the colors. -- Contributed
