JM tops Creek

MOUNDSVILLE - It didn't sit well with John Marshall that Indian Creek held the top spot in the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Class 5A softball standings. The No. 1-ranked team in West Virginia Class AAA then showed the Redskins why it believes it is the top team in the Valley.

Amy Rotriga threw one strike after the other as she collected 12 Ks and the Monarchs blanked visiting Indian Creek, 8-0, in six innings on Tuesday.

''(Indian Creek was) undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the OVAC rankings,'' John Marshall coach Ed West said. ''I think the girls were ready for that.''

John Marshall certainly showed they were ready as Jackie Gellner and Kylie Howard both crossed the plate in the bottom of the first as the Monarchs (14-3) took a 2-0 lead.

John Marshall went right back at it in the second when a Rotriga double brought in Athena Sayrie and Morgan Watson blasted one deep into left field to plate Rotriga.

It was three up and three down for the Redskins (6-1) in the third, while John Marshall cashed in two more runs to make it 6-0.

The game went scoreless in the fourth and fifth before Howard hit an inside-the-park homer and Sayrie scored off a hit by Rotriga.

''We've been playing really well,'' West said. ''(Tuesday) we were clicking on all cylinders. We had some timely hitting, some good pitching, some good defense, good base running and that equals 8-0.''

Rotriga continued to have a stellar week as the senior has stuck out 24 batters the past two days.

''She's been pitching really well. I mean really, really well,'' West pointed out. ''(This) performance is just typical the ways she's been throwing the past couple weeks.''

In the visitors dugout, Redskins coach Angie Penner was saying the same thing.

''Amy pitched a dominant game,'' she said. ''There were no surprises. When we came down here, we knew it would be a tough game.

"I'm kind of disappointed because our defense had some errors behind us and I know that we're better than that.''

Paige Geanangel, another All-OVAC pitching standout, took the loss for the Redskins and also had two of the team's three hits.

''We've got a good hitting team,'' West said. ''I know she's a good pitcher. We played her last year and hit her pretty good at Indina Creek, so, coming in, the way the girls are playing, we expect to get some runs and play some good defense and good pitching.

''As long as we keep playing good ball, we'll be a tough team to beat.''
