Retail sales show slight decrease

STEUBENVILLE - Retail sales in Jefferson County decreased about 1 percent in January compared to the same period last year.

Jefferson County Treasurer Raymond M. Agresta said retail sales for January totaled $74.14 million, generating $1,112,196 in piggyback sales tax revenue for the county. Agresta said piggyback sales tax receipts for January 2012 generated $1,130,949, based on retail sales of nearly $75.4 million.

January piggyback tax figures are historically the highest of the year.

Retail sales in Jefferson County have averaged $60.20 million a month in 2012, compared to $54.97 million a month during the prior four years.

The retail sales of nearly $75.4 million in January 2012 was the highest in more than four years.

Man arrested in hammer attack

STEUBENVILLE - Lamont Whatley, 47, of 1533B Euclid Ave. was arrested by City Police on Thursday on a felonious assault warrant in connection with a woman being attacked with a hammer and knife on Feb. 25.

Police said the woman said she was assaulted around 8 p.m. on Feb. 25 at a home in the 1400 block of Maryland Avenue. Officers said the woman had a 2-inch claw hammer wound in her thigh area and a cut on her finger that she said she received trying to avoid a knife. The woman also said she was kicked and punched about the head, police reported.

The victim was taken to Trinity Medical Center West for treatment of her injuries.

An arrest warrant was issued at the time for Whatley, police reported.

Hounds' Haven 'Adopt-A-Pet' set

STEUBENVILLE - Hounds' Haven Inc. will hold its Easter "Adopt-A-Pet" event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday inside Pet Supplies Plus at the Fort Steuben Mall.

There will be a variety of healthy adult dogs and cats. All animals have been vet-checked, tested for disease, vaccinated and spayed or neutered. No on-site adoptions are permitted, but interested individuals can claim their new pet at the shelter.

Hounds' Haven also is selling tickets for its Easter drawing on March 30 at Treasure Island Marketplace in Wintersville. Starting at 10 a.m., volunteers will sell tickets for the drawing with all proceeds to benefit the animals at the shelter.

WSX Management Club to meet

WEIRTON - The Weirton Steel Management Club will meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Giovanni's Restaurant (former Gio's Family Restaurant) in the banquet room.

All members and former members are invited to attend the dinner and social time.

Easter egg hunt set for Saturday

WINTERSVILLE - Wintersville Church of the Nazarene, 377 Longvue Drive off Two Ridge Road, will host an Easter egg hunt from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Children will be divided into age groups for an egg hunt, story time and a craft.

Scrabble session set Wednesday

STEUBENVILLE - Area Scrabble enthusiasts will gather Wednesday for their monthly game session in room 1504 at Eastern Gateway Community College. Play time will run from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., with newcomers welcome and encouraged to bring the board game if they have one. No fees are charged.

Bonus words will be words related to Easter.
