CHESTER - After taking a break in 2012, the Chester Hall of Fame Committee is gearing up for a new round of inductions.
This year's hall of fame induction ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m. on July 3 at First Christian Church, 330 Indiana Ave. In the meantime, the 12-member committee will be busy accepting nominations and selecting the latest class of inductees, said committee Chairman Jerry Smith.
"This will be the sixth year that the city will recognize individuals who have had a profound, positive impact on Chester," Smith said. "We rely exclusively on nominations from the people of Chester."
Smith said nominees can be either past or present residents of the Chester area. What's more, nominations need not come from a current resident of the city, he said.
"Candidates can be from any field - business, education, entertainment, government, military, sports - and should be people who have made themselves valuable to the city through their willingness to volunteer," Smith said.
Currently, the Chester Hall of Fame has 21 members and includes people such as former Mayor Roy Cashdollar; city Councilmen John "Woody" Woodruff and Mike Dotson; volunteer and Lions Club member Sue Badgley; and Fire Chief John Hissam.
The hall of fame dates back to the city's 2007 centennial celebration, when the first inductee class was announced: James E. McDonald, Charles "C.A." Smith, James E. Fox and Dr. David S. Pugh.
More people have been added to the hall of fame - in classes of four or five - every year since then except in 2012.
"It's pretty intense for the committee," Smith said, "so we just needed a break." The committee takes nominations year-round and keeps the names of non-inducted nominees for future consideration, he said.
The deadline for the current round of nominations is May 15. To submit a nomination, fill out the appropriate form and submit it with a narrative about the person and any supporting documents: awards, certificates, achievements, photos and news clippings.
Nomination forms can be picked up at the city clerk's office, First Choice America Community Federal Credit Union, Connie's Corner, Huntington Bank, Chaney's Service Station, Tom's Country Kitchen and Hancock County Savings Bank.
