Steubenville Art Association is thinking ‘spring’

The Steubenville Art Association is thinking "spring."

The annual regional exhibit for spring 2013 is on the calendar at Eastern Gateway Community College with the entry date set for April 12 from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; the receiving day on April 13 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; and the judging day set for April 13 with Bob VanNatta of Walnut Creek serving as judge.

The opening reception will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. May 4 with the awards ceremony set for 2:30 p.m.

The exhibit will be open to the public May 4-18, week days from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturdays, May 11 and May 18, from noon to 4 p.m. The college is closed on Sundays.

Any artist 18 and older can enter up to three works. Entry fees for Steubenville Art Association members is $20 for up to three works and $25 for nonmembers for up to three works.

All work must be original and have been created by the person whose signature it bears. Work must have been done within the last two years. All work must be framed, wired and ready for hanging. No sawtooth hungers are accepted.

A work cannot exceed 48 x 48 inches, including the frame. There is a 50-pound weight limit on entries.

Works in oil, watercolor, acrylic, pen and ink, colored pencil, stained glass, charcoal, pencil, batik, sculpture, pastel, mixed media, mosaic and pottery are accepted but not photography or ceramics from molds.

All art work must be hand delivered to EGCC located at 4000 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville.

Award will include one best of show, $300; eight merit awards, $100 each; 10 honorable mentions, $30 each; and two special awards, $50 each.

Any work can be priced fro sale with the SAA to take a 20 percent commission on any work sold. Artists should take this into consideration when pricing a work.

The artwork needs picked up May 20 during the hours of 9 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

All artists and SAA members are reminded of workshops planned from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Historic Fort Steuben, 120 S. Third St., Steubenville, including:

-- March 20, demonstration by Mary "Sis" Keenan of New Cumberland, "The How To's of Art Fairs."

-- April 17, "Water Media" by Marnee Muhleman of New Philadelphia featuring new techniques in acrylics and watercolor. The last day to register is April 12.

-- May 15, Demonstration on armatures and celuclay sculpture by instructor Martha Jamail, Kiyoe Howard, Janet Sawer and Marilyn O'Connell of Cambridge. The last day to register is May 10.

-- June 19, "Acrylics as Watercolor" by Wayne Chunat of Malvern. The last day to register is June 14.

The SAA meetings also are on those workshop dates, each held at 7 p.m. at Historic Fort Steuben.

An SAA Juried Art and Craft Fair will be held March 23 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Historic Fort Steuben. Entries must be in by March 9 with vendor setup from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. For information, contact Kim Hohlmayer at (740) 381-2228.
