SMITHFIELD - The unveiling of four awards received at the recent Ohio Fair Managers Association Convention was a highlight of the Jefferson County Agricultural Society's meeting held Tuesday at the Friendship Park fair office.
Debbie Hukill, treasurer, and Linda Daily reported first-place awards were received for excellence in television advertising and billboard advertising. Second-place awards were for the fair newsletter, which included the Herald-Star tab that is published at the conclusion of the fair, and for a fair website.
Also attending the convention were Ray Hilderbrand and Ken Taylor.

Hilderbrand presided at the meeting, where Tonya Butler requested a spot for an ATV-UTV pull during the Aug. 13-18 Jefferson County Fair, along with a June 8 spring event and a tentative fall event on Sept. 28 at the Friendship Park fairgrounds. Fair board members discussed working a slot into the fair, and it must be done before the March 19 meeting due to the printing of the fair book, organizers said. The June 8 event will be held with a 2 p.m. registration and 3 p.m. starting time.
Hukill passed out letters of opposition to Ohio Gov. John Kasich's budget proposal to tax the income of all fairs by 5 percent.
"This would amount to about $12,000 for us, and it will hurt all fairs," she said.
She asked that all fair board members send letters protesting the tax to the Jefferson County commissioners.
The board approved a Jefferson County Fair code of conduct, the same as adopted by Portage County and accepted by Ohio State University attorneys, it was noted. The codes are not limited to the show ring but are applicable to any event held on the county fairgrounds. This will include meetings, workshops, clinics, contest, shows, county fair and other events.
The consequences of violating the code of conduct may include but are not limited to a verbal warning; written warning; removal from grounds; suspension and possible reduction or loss of premiums or auction proceeds; and loss of future show privileges. Examples of bad behavior or conduct are unsportsmanship; improper language; bullying; intimidation; consumption of alcohol, illegal drugs, weapons, fireworks and destruction of property; violation of curfew; and disrespect for adults, volunteers, staff and other leaders, it was noted.
Loretta Finney, seventh and eighth department chairman, told members that advertisements for the fair premium book are needed by March 19, along with any changes that are to be made in the print of the book. She asked for donations of towels, wash cloths, cleaning supplies, hand lotion and any supplies that could be used at the fair.
Finney said a donation of lockers for the 4-H bathrooms is needed for the members to store their sweaters and anything that can't be carried around the grounds with them. She can be contacted at (740) 769-2721 for donations.
Hilderbrand announced the district meeting will be held April 6 at the Muskingum County Fairgrounds.
Carolyn Mercer, buildings and grounds and seventh and eighth department, expressed concern about the second furnace in the fair kitchen. It was noted that it is to be converted to electric heat.
During a past meeting, Vickie Whinnery reported organization of the junior fair board is under way and that Rachel Rector, 2012 queen, had represented the county well at the Ohio State Fair queen competition and finished as one of the top 16.
Mud Boggs will be held during the spring and summer on the dates of May 4, June 1, July 16 and Sept. 7.
