WEIRTON - The Madonna girls basketball team was outscored 22-21 over the final three quarters of Saturday's West Virginia Class A Region 1, Section 1 match up with Hundred.
Fortunately for the Lady Blue Dons they opened with an explosive 18-2 advantage over the opening eight minutes and secured a 39-24 win over the Hornets.
"I thought we came out very disciplined, and then we got very undisciplined," said Madonna head coach Don Ogden. "Unfortunately we weren't able to get back to the discipline we started out with. That start turned out to be big for us."
TO THE BASKET — Madonna’s Amy Davis goes to the hoop during the Blue Dons’ 39-24 Class A Region 1, Section 1 win over Hundred Saturday. Davis was fouled on the play.
The strong opening stanza saw six different Lady Dons enter the scoring column led by Monica Bragg's six and Becca Holt's four. The Hornets managed just a Nikki Cunningham basket.
Madonna hit a cold stretch in the second quarter, tallying only a Bragg three-pointer. Madonna's defense kept up pressure during the offensive woes, allowing only five points - four from Emily Ebert.
The third quarter saw the Hornets cut the lead to single-digits twice at 21-12 and 23-14, but the Blue Dons had another run in them. Madonna scored nine straight to push the advantage to 32-14. Hundred scored the quarters final four points to make the three quarter score 32-18, but never threatened again.

Madonna held a 7-6 advantage over the final eight minutes with five of their points coming at the line. Katie Tennant scored five of the Hornets' six points as the game closed 39-24.
Monica Bragg led the Lady Blue Dons with 12 points and nine rebounds. Holt and Nicolette Sellitti each scored seven.
Tennant was the bright spot for Hundred. The Hornet center just missed a triple-double with 11 points, 16 rebounds, and nine blocks.
"Something we talked about at halftime was that our center, instead of taking it to her because she was getting a lot of blocks, that we would use her bring Tennant out and her job was then to distribute to the other girls down low," said Ogden. "It worked a little bit.
"It kind of limited some of the things we were doing offensively, but Hundred came out and gave us some difficulty with their defense."
Madonna (11-11) continues its Region 1, Section 1 tournament run Tuesday when it travels to Magnolia.
