"We started off fast against them the other night and we were able to do the same thing here tonight," said Big Red coach Mike Haney. "I like our unselfishness and the way we are playing.
"Our guys will have an open shot, see someone with a better one and give it up. That's what you like to see as a coach.
"Two things we liked tonight were the hustle on our defense and our unselfishness."
Adam Sterling led the way for Big Red (14-3) with a game-high 19 points. Brandon Herring-Hill delivered 15, Chris Smith 14 and Mylik Young 10. Tajuan Lawson added eight and John Linn seven.
"We turned the ball over a lot in the first half, but their pressure is that good," said Red Riders mentor Mike Granato. "Mike has done a great job with them getting them to understand team defense and team offense. They are a very unselfish group. You watch them play and I don't know where the weakness is.
"We scouted them twice and played them twice, their defense is smothering. And, it's not just smothering against us. It's smothering against everybody."
Josh Groves led the way for the one-win Riders with 17 points. Chris Wood came off the bench to added 13.
"I told the kids after the game that I really appreciate the way the seniors are going about their business," said Granato. "I've been in this locker room when we've been 15-1 and I've been in this locker room when we're 1-15, I really appreciate the fact with the seniors that they are unselfish, trying to help the younger kids.
"They are doing the things they need to do for us to be successful and I feel for them.
"Hopefully as we go down the stretch, we can catch a couple wins and get a little momentum going into the tournament. At the end of the day, all the cliches are true. Every team is 0-0 once you get into sectional play.
"A game like tonight, get's you ready for that tournament.
"We're going to see good teams, but we're not going to see anybody that good. The triple A state championship game may not have a team that good."
Weir High steps back into action Saturday at North Marion.
Big Red hosts Martins Ferry Saturday with a junior varsity tip at 4 p.m.
"We like a lot of the things our team is doing," said Haney. "But, we still have work to do."
