TORONTO - The city school district's board chose it officers for 2013 during the annual reorganizational meeting followed by a special meeting Tuesday at the Karaffa Middle School library.
"(Board member) Karen Walker is going to be our new board president for 2013," said Fred Burns, superintendent. "(Board member) Jay Foster is going to be the incoming vice president.
He's been a board member, but this is the first time he's been assigned to one of the top two positions. Both (appointments) were by unanimous decision.
"All committee assignments will stay the same," continued Burns. "The board will continue to meet at 5 p.m. the third Thursday of every month. We're going to have a special working meeting at 5 p.m. Jan. 22 at the Karaffa library. The board will just be working on the district's strategic plan. No (administrative) action will be taken during the meeting."
Burns said board members and interested citizens are invited to attend a meeting at 10 a.m. Feb. 13 at the construction trailer on the site of the district's new building for an update on construction progress.
"The board members were presented with plaques in recognition of January being School Board Recognition Month," Burns said, adding board members also heard a presentation on a possible district swimming program presented by parent Jennifer Karaffa. "We took that under advisement, and we took no action on that," Burns said.
During the reorganizational meeting, board members also decided to continue to collect a salary of $80 per member per month, said Burns.
"That's the state minimum required salary by law," he said. "We have a tremendous board right now that's looking out for the best interests of the pupils and students."
The next regular board meeting will be at 5 p.m. on Feb. 21 at the Karaffa library.
