Red Cross trip discussed

December 29, 2012
The Herald-Star
American Red Cross Jefferson County Chapter volunteer Vincetta Tsouris, seated, third from left, a registered nurse, discussed her recent trip to New York City with other chapter volunteers. During her two-week stay over the Thanksgiving holiday, she worked with other nurses and mental health workers in providing and assessing the needs of those affected by Hurricane Sandy. Vincetta was assigned to the Greater New York Chapter and saw clients in the Bronx, Staten Island, Harlem, Manhattan and Brooklyn. Every day her team would help clients renew prescriptions, arrange for visiting nurses and on occasion just sit and talk with them about the hurricane. Many clients were still in shelters as their homes were destroyed. The volunteers also brought needed supplies such as water, personal hygiene items, diapers and other necessities. Individuals wishing to help locally and during major disasters must complete an application, complete the background check and participate in several required American Red Cross response courses. For information or to volunteer, go to www.redcross.org or call the chapter at (740) 264-7244. With Tsouris are, seated, from left, Marge Bedortha, Barb Baird and Margie VanKirk; and back, Pat Daily, chapter Chairman Joe Loizzo, Ron Stillwagon.
