On Dec. 1 in Rock Hill, S.C., seven Indian Creek students ran in the Amateur Athletic Union Cross Country National Race.
Four high school students - Fanci Ward, Kyle Weaver, Allen Keister and Tyler Gaydos - along with junior high pupils Karli Celestin, Mario Allietta and George Shea competed in their perspective races. Qualifying times for the nationals were previously attained during the state meet in Columbus.
These runners were fortunate to be coached by Jack Fluharty, Matt Morrow and Erica Hosterman. These coaches directed the runners through grueling training and miles of running. These coaches gave the children support, encouragement and confidence to believe in themselves both on and off the course. Morrow and Hosterman volunteered their coaching talents, and Fluharty went above and beyond, both monetarily and in spirit. The coaches' dedication to the cross country (and track) programs is commendable.
As the mother of a first-time cross country runner, my family and I thank the coaches for my son's new-found confidence and an amazing experience. In the future, I hope the cross country program gets the recognition it deserves. Bravo to all the runners. We are so proud of all of you.
