WEIRTON - Nearly 300 families will receive help from the city's Salvation Army this holiday season.
Several area residents spent Tuesday night volunteering their time to assist in packing boxes of food for the Salvation Army's distribution today. Some families in need also will receive Christmas gifts from the organization.
Families were asked to be present outside the Weirton Salvation Army from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today to accept boxes of food along with a $50 gift certificate donated by KDKA-TV and the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank for turkeys.
Funding for the distribution also was provided by local Rotarians to benefit families in Brooke and Hancock counties.
The Salvation Army also will distribute bags of Christmas gifts purchased through the red kettle fundraiser and donations.
Capt. Ed Long of the Salvation Army welcomed 50 volunteers on Tuesday to pack 294 boxes of food for families to help provide a Christmas meal. He thanked them for giving their time.
"It could be your dollar or your dime or anything you choose to give at the kettles this year helping to supply the needs of these families," said Long. "It was the volunteer time manning the kettles and the time given tonight that has made this all possible."
Local volunteer Rebekah Cline said this was the first year she donated her time to help pack the boxes of food for families receiving assistance through the local agency. She said it was a very uplifting and rewarding experience.
"I don't understand why more people don't want to volunteer," she said. "I will definitely do this again and hope to see more people continue to give back."
Capt. Goldie Long said she knows the people who are in need appreciate all the hard work and efforts of the Salvation Army and the volunteers. She said besides donating at the kettles, the Salvation Army offered several opportunities for the community to share the holiday spirit with those less fortunate, which included Angel Trees and Coats for Kids.
