STEUBENVILLE - The Big Red girls stepped up their defense Monday night, creating 15 first-half turnovers while cruising to a 74-43 victory over visiting Edison Local.
The defense pleased veteran coach Phil Casinelli, whose team continues unbeaten in seven games.
"We were able to control the tempo from the tip and that had a lot to do with the outcome," he said. "We were able to score in transition and get up and down the floor. That's what we've been working on but we weren't doing it as well over the past few games. I think we're getting better at it."

With two starters missing, coach Jason Ensinger's 1-7 Lady Wildcats were outmanned. Katelyn Pollock, one of the team's top scorers is vacationing in Europe during the next couple of weeks and the Wildcats' inside presence, Abby Fonow, had the flu.
"Missing two starters kind of hurts the game plan," Ensinger explained. "We already came into the year with girls in a lot of new roles and when girls in new roles are being replaced with more girls in new roles it kind of hurts things a little bit. It takes away from some of the things you're able to do.
"We've struggled this year with our offense and when you dig yourself a hole like that it just makes it that much harder. In the second half, I thought we got some better looks, but just couldn't get them to go down."
The Lady Big Red sprung out to a 22-9 first quarter lead and by halftime they expanded it to 44-16 leaving little doubt about the outcome. Big Red, which had three girls in double figures and eight of the nine girls that played in the scoring column, shot creditable 36 percent from the floor (26 for 77) and swished 12 of 19 free throws.
The Lady Red also won the battle of the boards 35-27 often times getting two and three shots at the basket during a single possession.
As she has for most of the season, Emily Masloski led the Big Red offense with 24 points. Another junior, Mytia Barker, scored 13 points and still another junior, Taylor Young, tallied l1 points and led the rebounding, along with Brittany Bodo, also a junior, with seven off the boards.
Maddy Hunter only hit one field goal, but made nine of 12 from the foul line to be the only Lady Cat in double digits. She had 11 points while Molly McCoy backed her up with nine and Kayli Stewart got eight.
Big Red entertains Cleveland Rhodes at 1 p.m. Saturday, while Edison continues on the road for its next game Thursday night at Buckeye Local.
