Students visit Holocaust museum

December 17, 2012

Students in Brooke High School's Advanced Placement European History class and an elective course on the Holocaust received a private tour of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, courtesy of Brooke graduate David Guio. Guio coordinated the visit with Greg Rothwell, a social studies teacher at the school.

The students learned of the Jews' struggle and liberation during the rise of the Nazi Third Reich through the end of World War II and participated in a discussion with Emanuel "Manny" Mandel, a Holocaust survivor. Mandel saddened Brooke students with stories of survival in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp and struggles that led to his arrival to the U.S. The trip's purpose was to create awareness of the Holocaust and global genocide throughout history and encourage tolerance, Rothwell said.
