board OKs policies
STEUBENVILLE - Eastern Gateway Community College Board of Trustees approved three resolutions related to its purchasing policy during a special meeting Thursday.
Two resolutions modified the purchasing policy for projects to allow the board's building and finance committee to review and approve the selection of project architects and the associated contract for services for the roof replacement project and Pugliese Center parking lot restoration project on the Jefferson County Campus.
The resolutions authorize Eastern Gateway President Laura Meeks to sign the contracts.
Trustees also agreed to authorize the building and finance committee to review and approve the purchase of digital document software services.
Area native named
as trooper of year
MARION - Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Mark Menendez, a Mingo Junction native and Catholic Central High School graduate, was named Trooper of the Year at the patrol's Marion Post.
Menendez, 33, was selected by fellow officers at the post based on his leadership skills, professional ethics, courteous treatment of others, enthusiastic work attitude and cooperation with supervisors, peers and the public.
Menendez joined the patrol in 2004, where his first assignment was at the Bucyrus Post and has been at the Marion Post since 2007. He received four commendation letters in 2012 and has been a field training officer for two troopers this year. His patrol awards include the Health and Physical Fitness Award in 2011, five year safe driving award, a total of 11 commendation letters, Post Trooper of the Year Award at Bucyrus in 2006 and the Marion Post Trooper of the Year Award in 2011.
Menendez also was named district trooper of the year for a nine-county area this year, and will be in contention for the state trooper of the year recognition.

STEUBENVILLE - Crystal L. Sortor, 29, of Apartment D, 811 Market St. was placed on three years of probation Friday by Jefferson County Common Pleas Judge Joseph Bruzzese Jr. after Sortor pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual contact with a minor.
Sortor had sexual contact on July 20 with a then 14-year-old boy, according to court documents.
Bruzzese ruled that Sortor is a Tier II sex offender, requiring her to report her address to the county sheriff every 180 days for 25 years.
She faces up to three years in prison if she violates probation.
in stolen car case
STEUBENVILLE - Todd Bennett, 35, of 17502 state Route 152, Toronto, was sentenced to 15 months in prison on Friday by Jefferson County Common Pleas Judge Joseph Bruzzese Jr. after Bennett pleaded guilty to receiving stolen property.
Bennett stole a car in East Liverpool on Oct. 3 and was pulled over and arrested by Toronto Police, according to court documents.
Cross Creek Township
trustees set meetings
WINTERSVILLE - The Cross Creek Township trustees will meet at noon on Dec. 28 for the month's regular meeting as well as to reorganize for the coming year.
The trustees will meet at the board office, 251 Airport Road.

John Scott Highway to close for pipe repairs
STEUBENVILLE - John Scott Highway will be closed to all traffic from Mall Drive to Lauretta Drive from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.
Assistant Wastewater Superintendent Chuck Murphy said the street closing is necessary for the repair of a culvert pipe.

Pestas Market holding
fundraiser for police
MINGO JUNCTION - Pestas Market, 300 Standard Ave., will be holding a hoagie sale to raise money to buy batteries for village police cruisers.
The market is selling the hoagies for $2.50, with $1 from each sale going to the fund. The market also will be collecting cash donations. The batteries will be purchased from Mingo Auto Parts, the market reported.
The fundraiser will continue through the end of the year, the market reported. If enough funds are not generated, the store will donate the remaining amount.
