BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Franciscan University of Steubenville men's basketball team lost a heartbreaker to division rival D'Youville College Sunday, 68-65.
The women dropped a 62-49 count to the Spartans.
The men had a one-point lead with one minute left in the game, but couldn't hold on.
"We had the ball at the end of the game," head coach John Lamanna said. "We couldn't get a shot off and ended up turning it over.
The Barons' Christian Duke and Joe Rine recorded a double double with Duke totalling 18 points and 10 rebounds and Rine 14 points and 20 rebounds.
"They are both really responding and growing as players," Lamanna said.
The Barons had four first-year players record over 30 minutes.
"We are really starting to put it together," Lamanna said. "We need to stay positive and I'm very proud of our effort. Our guys left it all on the court today.
"It's a matter of learning and growing from these experiences so that we have the right responses next time," Lamanna said.
The Barons host Ohio University-Eastern at 8 p.m. Monday.
The women trailed by five points at halftime.
"We were trying to make a constant comeback and to D'Youville's credit they played a great game," head coach Suzy Delaney said. "They were nailing their shots and it was just frustrating that we were getting opened shots but we didn't knock them down.
"If your shots aren't falling then you've got to make the stop on them but they just powered through our attempts to stop them. We didn't apply the extra pressure we needed to at a consistent rate."
Sophomore's Lacey Huck and Amy O'Keefe led FUS with 17 points each.
The Lady Barons (2-5, 2-2) welcome Caltech at 6 p.m. Monday.
